Battlefield Primary School is 100 years old in 2012. The Parent Council is setting up a Committee to lead on the celebrations . As part of this they are looking for memories, stories and photos from any past pupils of the school, no matter how young or old.

BIG STEP FORWARD FOR COMMUNITY ARENA IN QUEEN’S PARK!
The creation of a versatile community performance space on the site of the former bandstand in Queen’s Park, Glasgow, has moved several steps closer to being realised, following a successful fund raising campaign by localcommunity councils and planning approval from Glasgow City Council. The aim of the project is adapt the century-old bandstand site, derelict for the last 15 years, and create a new multi-functional outdoor arena foruse by community and visiting performance groups. Music, dance, theatre, film, children’s activities, exercise classes and skating were some of the events requested by local people during extensive community consultation over the last two years.
Work is expected to take place this year on the first phase of the project which will restore and develop the arena terraces and provide a smooth, level performance space and new drainage and ground consolidation work. The space should be ready to host an events programme in 2012, in time for the 150th anniversary of the Park’s opening in September 2012.
The first phase is expected to cost about £230,000 and funding has been secured from the Landfill Communities Fund, the Southside Central, Pollokshields and Langside Area Committees of Glasgow City Council and the Strathbungo Society. The project started as a pilot project supported by the Scottish Government is pursuit of their empowering communities agenda and has made rapid progress since beginning in spring 2009. Glasgow City Council, who own the Park, have supported the project by undertaking investigative ground surveys and will assist with the remedial underground works, landscaping and drainage works in the surrounding area.
The project is being led by representatives of the four community councils which border the Park – Crosshill/Govanhill, Langside, Battlefield and Camphill, Mount Florida, and Shawlands and Strathbungo. It follows on from extensive consultations and presentations to local community groups and stakeholders. During the 2009 Southside Festival 94% of 717 respondents to a questionnaire indicated their enthusiasm for and interest in the project which answers a need for a range of music, drama, dance and other activities involving the whole community, and especially young people. The project design is the work of ZM Architects (Glasgow) who won the competition for the Arena design in 2010. The second phase of the project, estimated at £300k and consisting of a purpose designed staging structure for film as well as performing arts, and further seating and facility improvements will be the subject of a second stage fund raising campaign.
The project began in spring 2009 as a Scottish Government supported pilot project to see if community councils could work together in a common cause, an objective which has been realised and far surpassed. To enable fund raising and plan for the sustainability of the project under community management, the Steering group has now formed acharity and company limited by guarantee, Queen’s Park Arena Ltd.
Evelyn Silber, the Steering group chair, said, ‘ We are delighted that this community-led project has attracted such a high level of public and stakeholder support. We look forward to achieving phase 1 so events can begin there in 2012 and are looking to develop our operation to run the events programme. Ramblers step out for 2014 – helping to deliver a physical activity legacy for the Commonwealth Games
Ramblers Scotland is launching new walk programmes in various locations Glasgow as part of the organisation’s aim to get more people in the city out walking. Members of the public are invited to come along to public meetings and learn about these new programmes and the work of The Ramblers in Scotland.
One of the meetings will be held at:
Conference Hall, Queens Park Church, 170 Queens Drive
Thursday 12th May 7.30 p.m.
Attendees will receive a free copy of new Programmes of Walks for people based in the South Side of Glasgow. Walks will be on Saturdays or Sundays; some full day, others half day; some easy, others strenuous. There will be a meeting point at Queen’s Park where it is planned that those with cars can give lifts to the start of the walk to those without cars. Everyone is welcome.
This initiative links to Ramblers Scotland’s “Walk the Path to 2014”, which supports the Scottish Government’s Active Nation plan to encourage Scottish people to be more active in the run up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
We hope that many people will join The Ramblers as full members (joining details available at meeting or from contact below), but anyone is welcome to go for up to three Ramblers walks before joining.

The latest update from the volunteers at the project:
The next informal gardening session in the Battlefield Community Garden will on Monday 2nd May from 4pm. We’ll then have another session @ 5pm on Sunday 15th May. All welcome.
We’ll be at the Southside Festival on the 28th May in Queens Park and we’ve set the date for our own Battlefield Street Party for the 9th July in the Community Garden.
The Battlefield Community Project is working in partnership with Southside based community and environmental organisation on a range of projects this year – including support for the community garden project, transport and energy work. More to follow on that soon, but for now please see the attached for the Urban Roots Blossom Festival, to take place in Toryglen, 11am – 4pm on Saturday 30th April. The day will be a vibrant celebration of environmental arts, gardening, sustainable transport and diy energy fun. There’ll be music, food and other entertainments. All welcome.

The improvement of the old Bluebell Woods land at Camphill Avenue is now almost complete. After public discussions, the grant from Glasgow City Council Langside Area Committee was spent on improving paths, installing 4 new lights to increase safety and planting of 30 semi-mature native trees to begin the restoration of the woodland. The planting was carried out by Michael Lee of Aspen Trees, a Battlefield based firm, on 10th February . He reported that “the feedback we got from people passing today was very positive regarding the trees”. Later in 2011 some more bluebell bulbs will be planted to add to the existing and slowly spreading display. Photos of the new planting are below.
