Shawlands Town Centre
Following calls by residents, businesses and Shawlands & Strathbungo Community Council to revitalise Shawlands Town Centre. Glasgow City Council last year started work on an Action Plan.
Particular concerns had been raised about the condition of the Arcade, vacant shop units, parking and anti-social behaviour. As you know more recently there have been the effects of the global economic crisis which has led to the closure of Woolworths.
To progress the Action Plan, the Council have therefore formed a Town Centre Steering Group consisting of Councillors, representatives of key departments, Glasgow South East Regeneration Agency, the business community, Community Health and Glasgow Community Planning.
One of the first tasks the Steering Group identified, was to find out who the customers for Shawlands are, where they came from, why they choose Shawlands instead of other centres and more importantly what improvements could be carried out to make sure people continue to shop there.
The Steering Group also identified a need to find out how the retail businesses themselves are performing and what improvements could help.
During the Southside Festival, the Council therefore launched a Customer Survey to find out what Southsiders think and distributed hundreds of questionnaires at the event and around the Shawlands Centre.
The Council is keen to make sure they get as many views as possible and will be consulting around the Centre till 31 August 2009.
Your views are very important and we urge you to complete one or our ‘Quick’ or Detailed Surveys.
The questionnaires and collection boxes are available in public buildings throughout Shawlands, by emailing Shawlands@drs.glasgow.gov.uk or through the Council website on:
