Following calls by residents, businesses and Shawlands & Strathbungo Community Council to revitalise Shawlands Town Centre. Glasgow City Council last year started work on an Action Plan.

Particular concerns had been raised about the condition of the Arcade, vacant shop units, parking and anti-social behaviour. As you know more recently there have been the effects of the global economic crisis which has led to the closure of Woolworths.

To progress the Action Plan, the Council have therefore formed a Town Centre Steering Group consisting of Councillors, representatives of key departments, Glasgow South East Regeneration Agency, the business community, Community Health and Glasgow Community Planning.

One of the first tasks the Steering Group identified, was to find out who the customers for Shawlands are, where they came from, why they choose Shawlands instead of other centres and more importantly what improvements could be carried out to make sure people continue to shop there.

The Steering Group also identified a need to find out how the retail businesses themselves are performing and what improvements could help.

During the Southside Festival, the Council therefore launched a Customer Survey to find out what Southsiders think and distributed hundreds of questionnaires at the event and around the Shawlands Centre.

The Council is keen to make sure they get as many views as possible and will be consulting around the Centre till 31 August 2009.

Your views are very important and we urge you to complete one or our ‘Quick’ or Detailed Surveys.

The questionnaires and collection boxes are available in public buildings throughout Shawlands, by emailing Shawlands@drs.glasgow.gov.uk or through the Council website on:

The Community Council are delighted to announce their involvement in this spearheading project in collaboration with 3 other local Community Councils.

In February, the Scottish Government announced the award of £15,000 to pump prime a project to renovate the performance area in Queen’s Park for the use of the local communities and groups. LBCCC will be working with 3 other Community Councils whose areas lie around the Park – Crosshill/Govanhill, Mount Florida and Shawlands & Strathbungo - to develop a scheme and raise the full cost. We are being supported by officers from Glasgow City Council.

This is one of only two pilot projects throughout Scotland designed to enhance the capacity of community councils to initiate, deliver and run projects for their own communities. The first meeting of the group established that the community councils are united in support of the idea and wish to see practical, sustainable facilities set up for contemporary use.

Evelyn Silber, Chair of Langside, Battlefield and Camphill Community Council, who is chairing the project group, said, ‘We are delighted to have been awarded this funding since Queen’s Park is a space enjoyed by so many people right across the South side. In working to provide a modern performance space, in succession to the previous bandstands, we believe we are doing something which will help local groups and performers, young and old, to showcase their work and talents and to create entertainment open to all.’

Andrew Montgomery, Secretary of Shawlands & Strathbungo Community Council and Chair of the Southside Festival Steering Group, said, ‘We very much welcome this collaborative project which will deliver a real benefit to the community. Community Councils are very focused on local needs and therefore one of our first objectives is to ask any local group who may wish to make use of the space to contact their Community Council.’

If you wish to comment on the project or are part of a music, drama or dance group who might be keen to make use of the space, please use the feedback forms on the Community Council websites. These are:
